Monsoon and heat: is it safe to charge in extreme weather?

18 Aug 2026 · 4 min read · EVee Buddy Team

In Kerala, the monsoon is serious, and summers are hot across India. A common question is whether it is safe to charge in heavy rain or extreme heat. The short answer is yes, with a few sensible precautions.

Why charging in rain is safe

  • No power until locked: the charger does not send power until the connector is fully inserted and the car and charger have confirmed a safe connection.
  • Sealed design: connectors, sockets and chargers are designed and tested to resist water and dust.
  • Protection devices: residual current and earth fault protection cut power immediately if a fault is detected.

Sensible precautions in the monsoon

  • Do not charge if the station is flooded or the car is standing in water.
  • Keep the connector pointing down when handling it, and do not let water pool inside.
  • Do not use a charger with visible damage, cracked cables or exposed parts.
  • Avoid touching the charger during lightning; wait it out if you can.

Charging in heat

Chargers and cars manage temperature actively. In very hot weather you may notice slower charging: the car reduces power to keep the battery in a safe range, and chargers may limit output to protect their electronics. This is normal.

Heat tips

  • Prefer shaded or covered charging bays.
  • After a long highway drive, the battery may be hot; charging may start slower and then speed up.
  • Avoid leaving the car at 100% in direct sun for long periods.

How we build for the weather

EVee Buddy uses chargers rated for outdoor dust and water, adds canopies where needed, and plans sites to avoid low-lying areas that flood.
